Wall-e, the new Short Circuit?

January 9, 2008 · 6 Comments

I just watched a preview for the upcoming new Disney movie Wall-E. Wall-E looks like Short Circuit, but the movie is not a rip off of the old classic but instead a new sci-fi movie that kids will love, at least that’s what it looks like to me. The preview doesn’t give away much, but from the looks of it, Wall-E has been alone for 700 years and now he finds some friends. I assume the friends are other robots or something, who knows. All I know is that I will probably going to see this movie. My four-year-old daughter will love this movie. I think I will show her the trailer, but she won’t understand that it doesn’t come out in the theatres for another six months. I guess to build hype about the movie they want people to be anticipating it. I guess that worked for Seinfeld’s Bee Movie.  After doing a little more research, thanks to wikipedia, I discovered the premise of the movie. It’s about Earth becoming abandoned and left with poor little Wall-E to clean up. The clean up program failed and Wall-E was left all alone. Poor little thing, but don’t dispair, he falls in love. This movie was written before Toy Story and was one that kept getting put on the back burner. I guess the best come last. It sounds like a cute story. They say it’s not about science fiction so much as the story about the relationship of this little robot and a larger one.

There is so much “feel good” about this movie even only after a teaser and a little hype. The musical overature that builds and builds into a warm and wonderful crescendo harkens back to a decades past when the parents and grandparents of today were simpler and bouncier tunes on the radio and movie soundtracks.
WALL-E is Johnny 5, R2D2, Huey, Dewey and Louie (Silent Running) and much more.
This observation is only superficial because it comes from the teaser trailer which lasts only several minutes.
Walt, your “heart” is alive and well in the creative geniuses at Pixar.
I predict much love, heart-warming moments and a few tears to be shed in another blockbuster masterpiece from – Pixar!

b – pixar is owned by steve jobs (ceo of apple) who sold pixar to disney. Of course they’re going to use mac sounds like the start-up sound. They own them after all!
HAL – yes, agreed but surely that’s a nod to Kubrick? :)
Can’t wait to see this film!

The story isn’t the issue. The character that we all grew up to love and have affection for it totally ripped off by the Wall-e character. Shame on them. Hope Spielberg takes them to the cleaners
