In memory of John

December 12, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Today I am writing my blog in memory of one of my students. It’s sad when anyone dies, but it’s really sad when you’re just getting to know someone, and then just like the flick of a switch, they are gone.

I teach a computer class to a group of Veterans on a weekly basis. John was one of my students. I remember the first day of class, he didn’t know anything about the computers. By the last class period I spent with him, he was pretty self sufficient. After class was over he asked me to spend more time with him next time on how to do more things, and then we said our goodbyes, little did I know I would never see him again.

John was also more special to me than some of the other students, since he reminded me of my dad. He was about the same age and seemed to be similar. He was of a different background, but shared similar stories of growing up.

I thought I could write something really profound, but I can’t. I know I will remember him, goodbye John.

The Nutcracker

December 8, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I went to my first ballet last night.

It was my daughter, Madeline’s birthday present (one of them) the others were toys, and she’s still looking for more…

Anyway, I am sure she enjoyed it much more than I did, since she is in dance. She’s only three years old, but I guess much more culturally accepting than I am. Either that or all the little dancers and people in costumes were entertaining to her.

It wasn’t that bad, but I couldn’t help but think of the scene in the early 80’s Zucker film, Top Secret starring Val Kilmer. In the Nutcracker scene, the dancers have bulges in the pants and the dancers… well just go watch the movie and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
